Story Line

The storyline of ‘Raazi’ is derived from best-selling book by Harinder Sikka titled ‘Calling Sehmat’. Alia’s character, who is a Kashmiri, is an Indian spy while being married to a Pakistani Army official, which is played by Vicky.

War, espionage and covert operations often inspire action-packed thrillers or outlandish spy films on the big screen. Rarely does it so happen that a spy mission – and the responsibility to thrill – rests on the delicate shoulders of a newlywed, amateur 20-year-old, who is plucked from college and planted behind enemy lines.

Meghna Gulzar’s ‘Razzi’, that stars Alia Bhatt as a Kashmiri girl married into a Pakistani family by her father to spy for India before the 1971 war, splinters the narrative that has been written so far for women in spy thrillers – she’s not a lethal weapon, nor a femme fatale, nor the honeytrap.

The story backed with power packed performance of the star cast will roll the theater with cinema critics and viewers across the globe.

Production Crew

According to a report, the filmmaker admitted that more than recreating nuances of the era, building up a set to best depict Pakistan of the 1970’s in India was difficult for the team.

The espionage drama which tells the story of an Indian woman married off to a Pakistani Army officer to become a spy for her country. Set in the 70s, this Indo-Pak story had director Meghna Gulzar taking up the mammoth task of recreating 1970’s Pakistan in India.

Crew selected locations like Kashmir, Mumbai, Delhi and few other places for the shoot. Due to which, the cast had to deal with weather change, from sudden rains to extreme climate.

‘Raazi’ is about a story that the whole nation will be proud of. He went on to clarify that it’s not just an India-Pakistan story. It breaks the law and universal mindset that we have — that people on this side are heroes and those on the other side are villains.

Backed by Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions, ‘Raazi’ will see will see love and patriotism put to the test when it hits theatres on May 11, 2018.

Music Track in the movie

The trio revealed how they tried to get the Kashmiri folk’s influence for their four-track album in ‘Raazi’. Ehsaan Noorani told a daily that since ‘Raazi’ is set in Kashmir in India and PoK, both places boast of strong music influences and so they have used it in all their songs. Music has fusion of the rabab and some Afghani instruments, which gave the songs the sound of the region.

Shankar Mahadevan professed that the region played a significant role in the narrative making it imperative to stay true to the native sounds. He added how the trio focused on the scales of the songs. They have used Afghani and Middle-Eastern influences to give more originality to the songs in the film. The title track which is sung by Arijit Singh and ‘Dilbaro’, both has Kashmiri folk song fragrance. Gulzar saab had penning lyrics for the tracks having the flavor of Kashmir.

Performance expected

The film is full of dualities. So it’s a thriller but not the way thrillers are implemented or interpreted. It’s interpreted differently but it thrills nevertheless. Every shot of the movie will keep its spectators at the ‘edge of the seat’ and the cast is nervous of it.

So then let’s talk about the duality, which is expected to be one of the power performances. There is a huge emotional journey or upheaval that goes on along with plot. So you are getting tossed around as a viewer, along with the character who is also getting tossed around emotionally through the story.
